Action A.2

Establishment of soil temperature and relative humidity sensor and data logger in the temporary pond of Livadies.

Action A.3

Field work. Vegetation transects and fauna survey at the temporary ponds of Livadies, Greveno, Alykaina and Louka on Mt Oiti.

Action A.4

Field work. Count of population size and collection of samples for the soil seed-bank of Veronica oetaea*.

Action A.7

Field trips to Mt. Oiti for mapping of new populations of Juniperus foetidissima habitat (9560*).

Action A.9

The external assistant-ornithologist made his twenty-second field trip (8-11/05/2014) and submitted a full report.

Action A.10

Communication with ELGA confirmed two cases of bear damages in beehives in the area of Ypati  (Pyrgos and Mesohora). Additionally, information for bear damages in Elikonas south of the project area in the Region of Viotia was investigated. This case was not confirmed by ELGA after their visit at the site.

Action C.1

The whole works and interventions were mapped, relevant digital data were forwarded to the responsible Forestry Department of the project area and a significant part of the necessary permissions were granted. Staff of the Region of Sterea Ellada mapped the selected trails on Mount Oiti and Mount Kallidromo for the preparation of necessary paperwork for tendering procedure.

Action C.3

Ten (10) GPSR tracking ringers were delivered after sending them to Canada. Arrangements have been made with a shepherd on Mt. Kallidromo to place them on ten cows in order to monitor their daily activity.

The construction of non-permanent metallic cages was completed. 33 of them have been placed on the selected sites on Mt. Oiti  and 27 on Mt. Kallidromo.

Action C.5

Conservation and plant care works of the 9,000 transplanted Cupressus sempervirens plants.

Plant care works on grafted Cupressus sempervirens plants with Juniperus foetidissima  grafts collected from Mt. Oiti on two collection dates on January and March after opening of plastic cover to the plants.

Action C.9

Communication with the stockbreeders took place to monitor the condition of the donated Hellenic Livestock Guarding Dogs.

Action E.1

The project was presented at the Final Conference "Enhancing Biodiversity in Mediterranean Ecosystems from Theory to Practice" that took place in Thessaloniki, Greece. The conference was organized in the framework of LIFE09 NAT/GR/000326 project. On 28/06/2014 an article about the project was published in KATHEMERINI newspaper. The project team finalized the agenda of the two-day seminar for teachers.

Action Ε.3:

The webpage of the project is continuously updated.

General

On 6/16/2014 the HAO “DEMETER” team was invited to participate in a TV dialog concerning desertification, organized by the local TV-channel STAR Kentrikis Elladas. At the end of the conversation the ForOpenForests Life project was presented in detail, by the Dr. G. Karetsos.
